Orthopedic Surgery

(1) Overview

Our department has a wide range of orthopaedic specialists ranging from hands, spine and joints. We draw on the newest diagnostics and therapies to personalize the best treatment for each patient.

Orthopedic Surgery is a medical specialty for providing treatments for conditions that are related to musculoskeletal system including the bones, joints, cartilages and nerves. As we get older, all of us develop some degree of “wear and tear” in those tissues (“locomotive dysfunction”) and our job is to optimize this musculoskeletal function.

Hand Surgery

‘Hand Surgery’ is not well known to the general public. However, it is a highly specialized field responsible for hands, which are the most delicate and complicated parts in all locomotive functions. Specialists from Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery are in charge of Hand Surgery. The “Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand” which has more than 60 year traditions, takes a leading role of research. The doctors in charge of Hand Surgery belong to this society and are registered after having gained extensive experience.

Spine/Spinal Cord

This section covers all diseases related to spine/spinal cord. Starting with cervical spondylosis which is a common condition, almost all diseases relating to spine/spinal cord are treated by this section of the department, such as lumbar vertebrae herniated disk, lumbar spinal canal stenosis, bone fracture, deformation (scoliosis), trauma, infection and malignant tumors. We treat a wide range of age groups, from children to elderly people.

Joints

This section mainly performs prosthetic replacement arthroplasty for patients with hip osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis, femur head necrosis, rheumatic arthritis and so on. In recent years, we perform a prosthetic replacement arthroplasty not only for elderly people but also for young people, as the durability of prosthesis has become longer than previously due to the improvement of implant technology.

(2) Policy

Aiming for Functional Restoration by Accurate Physical Examination

Our largest goal is to recover the locomotive function. It is important to do accurate functional diagnosis to make this possible. For example, if you have difficulty in bending fingers, we need to identify which tissues, such as bones, joints, muscles, cartilages, nerves have problems to diagnose the cause. It is, therefore, indispensable to perform a physical examination based on expertise. It is not possible to diagnose the locomotor disorder only by images. We aim for improving locomotive functions using diagnostic skills built on long term experiences and training.

(3) Our Strengths

Striving to Act as a “High Quality Department Store”

Our department is currently able to treat almost all orthopedic diseases, offering comprehensive care from general orthopedic issues to more specialized orthopedic issues. We work in tight cooperation between different orthopedic specialists, enabling us to treat multiple orthopedic diseases at the same time. Our orthopedic teams consist of Joint Team, Spinal Team and Hand Teams, with each team being highly specialized. The human body is designed to move smoothly by various motor organs effectively working together. This highlights the importance of examining and treating the whole body rather than the body parts exhibiting symptoms.

Our hospital has over 30 specialities, providing continuation of care for multiple medical issues while patients are admitted to our hospital with orthopedic issues. Elderly patients often suffer from coexisting medical issues affecting the heart, lung and kidneys. As our neurosurgeons and cardiology specialists are working 24/7, you can feel reassured that we would be able to deal with any sudden change in the patient’s condition while being admitted to our hospital.

Our department will aim to act like a high-quality department service, by offering high levels of care across a wide range of orthopedic conditions. Although low quality department stores are often driven away by new high quality specialized stores, we believe that the high quality department store often remains valuable. Our team aims to become this “high quality department store”, continuously providing high quality care across all orthopaedic conditions.

Hand Surgery Team

Policy

We Offer a Wealth of Skill Sets and Expertise

Hand surgery is a highly specialized area, requiring detailed anatomical knowledge and finest skills. The hand is a unique organ requiring precise, complicated movements and the accurate diagnosis and treatment often requires specialist knowledge and expertise. Our hand team have already accumulated a wealth of experience and skill sets in order to provide high quality orthopedic care to each of our patients.

Our Strengths

Treating A Wide Range of Hand Diseases

The hand surgery team treats almost all conditions related to the hand. We conduct surgery utilizing a technique called microsurgery when connecting nerves, blood vessels or transplanting tissues. As the post-operative recovery is considerably dependent on the quality of rehabilitation care, we provide highly specialized rehabilitation to the hands.

We Treat Complex Hand Conditions Guided By the Wealth of Accumulated Experience

We often provide treatment to hand diseases that were regarded as complex cases by the other medical providers. We do this by making most of our experiences fostered by the complex cases dealt by the Hand Surgery Team at the Orthopedics Department of the Tokyo University Hospital, which is currently our affiliated hospital.

Message for Our Patients

Our hand surgeons often deal with the issues such as difficulty moving fingers, lumps in the hand and persistent symptoms after recovering from wrist/hand fractures or sprains. We may be able to offer the right solutions in those complex cases that were regarded as difficult to diagnose or treat at another hospital. In such cases, please come to see us with a referral from your doctor as much as possible

Spine/Spinal Cord team

Policy

We Value Patient-Centered Care

We believe that listening to our patients is at heart of our practice. We aim to fully understand the patient’s symptoms and to treat symptoms that are affecting their daily lives.

Protecting our patients’ safety and quality of the surgery is equally important. We have been successfully accredited by the JCI (Joint Commission International), ensuring that our health care is consistent with the high quality international standard care. Equally our spinal team has made every effort in meeting the standard expected by the JCI.

Our Strengths

Working Together With the Pain Management Team

For some patients it’s not always possible to remove all the pain despite surgical treatments. Our team regularly holds conferences with the pain clinic department in order to find the best solution for each patient.

Our Rehabilitation Team Works with You 7 days a week

Rehabilitation is undoubtedly an important of the treatment after the surgery in order to get patients back to normal life as soon as possible. This is the case with the spinal conditions that causes weakening of leg muscles, often requiring more intensive muscle strengthen training/walking training. Our rehabilitation works with you every day of the week including the weekends and national holidays, working tirelessly to improve the patient’s post-surgery motor functions.

Message for Our Patients

If you have orthopedic symptoms that are not improving despite treatments at another medical facility, please come and see our doctors. Some patients may improve with surgery while others may improve with more conservative treatment including pain management or rehabilitation. We aim to suggest and provide the best treatment available for each patient.

Joint Team

Policy

We Strive to Ensure Safe and Reliable Treatment

The durability of artificial joint replacement is determined largely by the accurate placement of the artificial joints. It is therefore undoubtedly important to make a well-coordinated pre-surgical plan and ensure that the plan is being followed through accurately. We also ensure that the patient’s risk of post-surgical complications are assessed prior to the surgery and coordinate with the other departments when necessary in order to ensure safety to all our patients undergoing surgeries.

Our Strengths

Standardizing Reliable and Safe Surgeries

Our joint team focuses on standardizing reliable and safe surgeries by ensuring that our protocols are accurately followed through rather than performing overly specialized elaborative treatments. We utilize 3D computer simulation in order to map the correct position for the artificial joints prior to any joint replacement surgeries. During the surgery, we use a computer-assisted portable navigation system, enabling us to confirm the position of the device in real time. We believe that following through the reliable standardized treatment protocols will lead to our most durable, yet reliable artificial joint replacements.

We Work In Collaboration With the Orthopedics Department of Tokyo University

Our orthopedic department has a close affiliation with the Orthopedics department of Tokyo University. We continuously update our expertise and technical skills by holding regular study meetings and exchanging information. We often collaborate with the Tokyo university orthopedic team when dealing with particularly complex cases.
