Center for Preventive Medicine

(1) Overview

The Center for Preventive Medicine is a site that conducts comprehensive medical checkups and general physical examinations. Currently, more than 10,000 people per year* come to the Center for comprehensive medical checkups.

  • *12,670 patients from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017

As the Center works closely with the respective hospital clinical departments, if a disease is discovered in the comprehensive medical checkup, patients can promptly undergo further testing/treatment at the hospital. In addition, the comprehensive medical checkup system used at the Center is tied into the electronic medical records that can be viewed by the respective clinical departments at the hospital. This enables the smoother sharing of information and treatment.

(2) Policy

The mission of the Center is to ensure the early detection and prevention of major diseases such as cancer and lifestyle related diseases. Lifestyle related diseases is the general term for diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, gout, kidney disease, ischemic heart disease, and cerebral infarction. If lifestyle related diseases or the risk of these diseases is discovered through the comprehensive medical checkup, hospital physicians will give appropriate guidance.

(3) Our Strengths

Endoscopy examinations that enhance the rate of detection of gastric cancer

Number of gastric cancer cases identified through comprehensive medical checkups (comparison of the hospital vs. the nationwide average)胃がんの発見率を向上させた内視鏡検査

  • *Nationwide averages created by NTT Medical Center Tokyo based on the data from the annual summary report from April 2015 to March 2016 of the Japan Society of Ningen Dock

The Center emphasizes thorough endoscopy examinations in order to raise the rate of detection of gastric cancer and esophageal cancer that can be cured through endoscopic treatment if detected early. Gastric cancer screenings using endoscopy are conducted by a board certified fellow of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society affiliated with the hospital’s Endoscopy Center in an effort to detect early stage gastric cancer and esophageal cancer that is difficult to detect through barium tests and stomach X-rays.
The detection rate for gastric cancer through the hospital’s comprehensive medical checkups is approximately double* that of the nationwide average.

  • *Compared the average detection rate at NTT Medical Center Tokyo (136 cases) with the nationwide average (67 cases) from April 2015 to March 2016.
  • *The source for the nationwide average is the fiscal 2015 summary from the Japan Society of Ningen Dock

In addition, approximately 80% of the gastric cancer cases detected through the hospital’s comprehensive medical checkups undergo further testing and treatment at the hospital’s clinical departments.

Chest CT and multiple checks to detect lung cancer

Number of lung cancer cases identified through comprehensive medical checkups (comparison of the hospital vs. the nationwide average)Chest CT and multiple checks to detect lung cancer

  • *Nationwide averages created by NTT Medical Center Tokyo based on the data from the annual summary report from April 2015 to March 2016 of the Japan Society of Ningen Dock

In the hospital’s comprehensive medical checkup, lung cancer screenings are conducted using a low-dose CT on patients aged 40 and above to enable the early detection of lung cancer. When confirming the data received from the tests, multiple checks are conducted by three physicians including a physician from Radiology in an effort to ensure that lung cancer is detected and not overlooked.
The rate of detection of lung cancer through the Center’s comprehensive medical checkups is approximately 4.5 times* the nationwide average, and of the patients in whom lung cancer was detected, approximately 85% underwent further testing and treatment at the hospital.

  • *Compared the average detection rate at NTT Medical Center Tokyo (87 cases) with the nationwide average (19 cases) from April 2015 to March 2016.
  • *The source for the nationwide average is the fiscal 2015 summary from the Japan Society of Ningen Dock

Efficient testing in a short period of time

The Center’s comprehensive medical checkups strive to enable patients to undergo various tests (physical measurement, electrocardiography, chest CT, etc.) in a short period of time, and in the case of the one-day course where patients arrive at 8:15 in the morning, all tests can be completed by around 1:00 p.m.*

  • *Patients who signed up for optional tests will finish after 1:00 p.m.

As the various tests are conducted by hospital staff using the hospital’s testing equipment, patients are able to receive the same highly accurate tests as patients who are already being treated at the hospital.

Message to our patients

As we enter the era of 100 year lifespans, in addition to “secondary prevention” with the early detection of diseases, “preliminary prevention” that prevents the onset of the disease itself (not getting sick) will become increasingly important.
Cancer and atherosclerotic diseases (myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disorders), which account for a major percentage of the cause of death of Japanese people include many diseases where factors such as smoking, diet, exercise, and obesity are involved in the onset of the disease. Consciously correcting lifestyle habits that may be risk factors for disease from when we are young is extremely important for living a healthy life true to yourself.
Comprehensive medical checkups are a meaningful system that comprehensively provide this kind of preventive medicine. Please take this opportunity to undergo a comprehensive medical checkup at the Center and make use of it in ensuring your healthy longevity.
