The musculoskeletal system consists of tissues such as bones, joints, muscles, cartilage, and nerves.
When the musculoskeletal system is impaired, resulting in reduced mobility, the condition is referred to as locomotive syndrome (locomo).

Hand Surgery

‘Hand Surgery’ or `Surgery of the Hand` is still relatively unfamiliar field to the general public. However, it is a highly specialized field responsible for hands, which are the most delicate and complicated parts in all musculoskeletal functions. Hand surgery is performed by specialists in both orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery. . The “Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand” which has more than 60 year traditions, takes a leading role of research. Physicians who specialize in hand surgery are members of this society, and with sufficient experience, they can be certified as board-certified hand surgeons by the society..

Spine/Spinal Cord

We provide comprehensive medical care for a wide range of spine and spinal cord disorders. Our services cover nearly all conditions related to the spine and spinal cord, including commonly encountered diseases such as cervical spondylosis lumbar vertebrae herniated disk, lumbar spinal canal stenosis, bone fracture, deformation (such as scoliosis), trauma, infections, and malignant tumors. We treat a wide range of age groups, from children to elderly.

Joints

We primarily perform joint replacement surgeries for conditions such as hip osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis, femur head necrosis, rheumatic arthritis and so on. In recent years, we perform joint replacement surgeries not only for elderly but also for younger patients, as the durability of artificial joints has become longer than previously due to the improvement of implant technology.

(2) Policy

Restoring Function Through Accurate Physical Examination

Orthopedic surgery’s primary goal is to restore the function of the musculoskeletal system. To achieve this, accurate functional diagnosis is essential. For example, when diagnosing the cause of a finger that cannot bend, it is necessary to determine which tissue—such as bone, joint, muscle, cartilage, or nerve—is affected. This requires a physical examination grounded in specialized medical knowledge. Musculoskeletal disorders cannot be accurately diagnosed through imaging alone. We strive to restore motor function by applying diagnostic skills honed through experience and rigorous training.

(3) Key Features of Our Orthopedic Department

Striving to Act as a “High Quality Department Store”

The human body moves smoothly when all components of the musculoskeletal system function properly. These components do not work in isolation; rather, they are all interconnected and function together. Therefore, when providing medical care, it is important to examine not only the symptomatic area but the entire body.
At our orthopedic department, we handle nearly all orthopedic conditions, allowing us to provide comprehensive care ranging from general to highly specialized treatments. We also provide coordinated treatment for patients suffering from multiple orthopedic disorders through close collaboration among our teams.
Our orthopedic department is divided into three specialized teams: “Joints,” “Spine and Spinal Cord,” and “Hand Surgery,” each offering expert-level care in their respective fields. We are also actively engaged in addressing cancer-related locomotive syndrome (cancer locomo), a growing issue in recent years, where cancer affects physical mobility.
Many of our orthopedic patients are elderly and suffer from multiple conditions affecting other organs such as the heart, lungs, and kidneys. Because our hospital is equipped with a wide range of medical departments, we can continue treating such comorbidities even during hospitalization. With 24-hour coverage by cardiology and neurosurgery departments, we are able to respond swiftly in the event of sudden changes in a patient’s condition.
While low-quality department stores may be driven out by emerging specialty stores, high-quality department stores will continue to hold value—and our department aims to be just that kind of high-quality provider.

Hand Surgery Team

（1）Policy

Mobilizing Specialized Knowledge and Techniques for Treatment

The hand performs extremely intricate and complex movements, and each of its tissues is a highly delicate and specialized structure. Therefore, the treatment of hand surgery conditions requires not only anatomical knowledge but also refined technical skills, demanding a high level of specialization. Drawing on our accumulated experience in treating hand disorders, we fully mobilize our specialized knowledge and techniques to provide the best possible care.

（2）Key Features

Comprehensive Care for All Hand Surgery Conditions

TOur hand surgery team provides treatment for all conditions related to hand surgery. When reconnecting nerves or blood vessels, or performing tissue transplants, we utilize advanced microsurgical techniques to carry out procedures with precision.
Additionally, since the outcome of hand conditions is greatly influenced by postoperative rehabilitation, we offer specialized rehabilitation programs tailored to each patient.

Expertise Enables Treatment of Complex Cases

Our treatments are grounded in extensive experience with the diagnosis and management of hand surgery conditions. Drawing on the knowledge gained through collaboration with the Hand Surgery Division of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Tokyo Hospital, we actively take on even the most complex and challenging cases.

（3）Message for Our Patients

If you are experiencing symptoms such as “inability to straighten a finger,” “inability to bend a finger,” “pain at the base of the thumb,” “lumps in the hand,” “persistent discomfort after a healed wrist fracture,” or “a wrist sprain that hasn’t improved,” a hand surgeon can help determine the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment. Even if a general orthopedic doctor has told you that “the cause is unknown” or “nothing can be done,” we may still be able to find a solution. Please bring a referral letter and any relevant imaging with you when you come for a consultation.

Spine/Spinal Cord team

（1）Policy

Providing Patient-First Care

At our facility, we are committed to a “patient-first” approach in all aspects of medical care. Our goal is to reliably eliminate symptoms while ensuring patient safety by minimizing the risk of surgical complications.
We are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), a global standard for healthcare quality and safety. This accreditation recognizes that our care meets international benchmarks, including for spinal surgery. We continue to refine our procedures to align with JCI standards and are dedicated to delivering safe and effective treatment with the patient as our top priority.

（2）Key Features

Collaboration with the Pain Clinic

In some cases, surgery alone may not be able to completely eliminate pain. To address this, we maintain close collaboration with our Pain Clinic team to provide comprehensive pain management. We also hold regular multidisciplinary conferences to evaluate and determine the most appropriate treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs.

Rehabilitation Available on Weekends and Holidays

Early rehabilitation is crucial for returning to normal daily activities after surgery. This is especially important for patients with spinal disorders, who often experience reduced lower limb strength. To support postoperative recovery, we provide intensive muscle strengthening and gait training—not only on weekdays but also on weekends and holidays—so that patients can regain their mobility as quickly and safely as possible.

（3）Message for Our Patients

If you are currently undergoing treatment for spinal disorders at another facility and have persistent symptoms such as numbness from the shoulder to the hand, pain radiating from the buttocks to the legs, leg weakness, difficulty urinating, or unusual sensations around the anus, we encourage you to consult us with a referral letter and any relevant imaging.
While surgery may be effective for some patients, others may benefit more from conservative treatments such as pain management or rehabilitation. We are committed to working together with you to find the most suitable treatment from a broad range of options tailored to your individual condition.

Joint Team

（1）Policy

Aiming for Safe and Reliable Treatment

In the joint replacement surgeries we primarily perform, the durability of the artificial joint depends greatly on how accurately it is positioned. Therefore, it is extremely important to create a thorough preoperative plan and to replicate that plan with precision during surgery.
Additionally, we assess the risk of complications based on the patient’s medical history and coordinate with other departments when necessary to provide optimal treatment.

（2）Key Features

Reliable Surgery Based on Standard Treatment Protocols

Our joint team focuses not on performing special or unusual procedures, but on thoroughly implementing standard treatments to ensure highly reliable surgeries.
Before surgery, we use detailed preoperative planning, including the use of 3D computer simulations to determine the optimal positioning of the artificial joint. During surgery, we utilize a portable navigation system that allows us to confirm the exact positioning of instruments in real time, ensuring that the plan is accurately followed.
We believe that properly adhering to standard treatment protocols is the most important factor in allowing patients to use their artificial joints with confidence for many years.

Collaboration with the University of Tokyo Hospital

Our orthopedic department works in collaboration with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Tokyo Hospital. We hold regular study sessions and information-sharing meetings to stay up to date with the latest knowledge and techniques.
For complex cases, we may also request support from physicians at the University of Tokyo.

（3）Message for Our Patients

If you are experiencing pain or stiffness in your knees or hips, please feel free to contact our department.
